An automatic pool cover is several systems working together: the fabric, the ropes and pulleys that move it, the track it runs in, and the motor and mechanism that drive it. They wear at different rates, and they very rarely fail at the same time.

That matters, because the most common replacement we do is fabric alone on a mechanism that is in good condition — considerably less involved, and less expensive, than replacing an entire system. The job of the first site visit is to work out which of those you actually need.

We replace covers on all major brands, including systems we didn't install and systems whose original manufacturer no longer supports them.

A rope has frayed or snapped	Repair	Ropes are a wear item on an otherwise healthy system. We replace both sides at once and check the pulleys they run over.
The motor has failed	Repair	A motor is replaceable on its own. What matters is finding what it was working against — a binding track will kill the new one too.
Sliders, guides, or pulleys are worn	Repair	Individually replaceable parts. Left alone they chew through ropes and fabric, so this is the cheapest possible moment to act.
Fabric is brittle, chalky, or splitting at the seams	Replace the fabric	Fabric is the shortest-lived component. On a sound mechanism, new fabric fits the system you already have.
The cover no longer holds water on top	Replace the fabric	A cover that won't hold water has lost its integrity. Patching buys weeks, not seasons.
Track is corroded or separating along its length	Assess in person	Short damaged sections can be replaced. Track that has failed end to end usually means a larger rebuild.
Mechanism, track, and fabric are all near end of life	Replace the system	Three separate repairs across two seasons normally costs more than replacing the system once, and you still have old components.
Parts for your system are no longer made	Replace or upgrade	Common on covers past about two decades. Where the track and pool geometry allow, we upgrade the mechanism and keep the rest.

Fabric Life

What Shortens a Cover's Life

Fabric life depends far more on exposure and care than on age alone. These are the five things that decide it.

Sun exposure: UV is the main thing degrading cover fabric. A cover on an unshaded southern exposure ages faster than an identical cover under tree cover — which is its own trade-off, since trees bring leaf load.
Standing water and debris: Water and leaves left sitting on a closed cover put constant load on the fabric and the ropes. A working cover pump is the cheapest life extension available.
Track alignment: A cover dragged across a misaligned or grit-packed track wears at the edges every single cycle. This is the failure mode people most often mistake for the fabric simply being old.
Winter load: Snow and ice are hard on fabric across our whole service area, and hardest in central Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Maintaining the water level under the cover is what carries that load.
Chemical balance: Water chemistry that runs aggressive shortens fabric life from underneath, and the damage is not always visible until the fabric is under tension.

The Process

How a Replacement Works

1. On-site measurement and assessment
We measure the pool and inspect the existing mechanism, track, housing, and lid. This determines whether you need fabric only, a mechanism upgrade, or a full system — and we would rather tell you it's fabric than sell you a system.
2. Specification and quote
You get a written scope covering exactly what is being replaced, what is being reused, and what warranty applies. Fabric is made to your pool's measurements, so this step has to be right.
3. Fabrication
The cover is manufactured to your specification. Lead time depends on the manufacturer and the season — spring and early summer are the busiest, which is why we recommend booking replacements over the winter.
4. Removal and installation
We remove the old cover, service the mechanism while it's accessible, fit and tension the new fabric, and cycle the system repeatedly to confirm it tracks evenly across its full travel.
5. Handover
We walk you through operation, show you what to watch for, and set out the maintenance that will get the most life out of the new cover.

What we do

We measure the pool and the existing system, then fit new fabric to the mechanism you already have wherever the mechanism is sound. Fabric is the shortest-lived part of an automatic cover, so replacing it on a healthy system is routine and much less involved than replacing the whole cover.

Where the track and the pool geometry allow it, we upgrade the mechanism, housing, and controls without rebuilding the whole installation. This is common on older pools where the original cover was well installed but the hardware has been superseded.

Automatic Pool Cover Replacement FAQs

Should I repair or replace my automatic pool cover?: It depends on which part has failed. Ropes, sliders, pulleys, and motors are wear items and are normally worth replacing individually on an otherwise sound system. Fabric that has gone brittle, split at the seams, or lost its ability to hold water is at the end of its life and needs replacing. If the mechanism, track, and fabric are all near the end together, a full system replacement usually costs less than three separate repairs over two seasons. How long does automatic pool cover fabric last?: Fabric life depends far more on exposure and care than on age alone. Sun, standing water, leaf and snow load, and being dragged over a misaligned track all shorten it. A cover that is kept clean, drained, and running on a well-aligned track lasts considerably longer than one left to sit under debris.
Can I replace just the fabric and keep my existing cover system?: Usually, yes — and it is the most common replacement we do. If the mechanism, track, and housing are sound, new fabric can be fitted to the system you already have. We measure the pool and inspect the existing hardware first, because fitting new fabric to a worn mechanism just puts a new cover on an old problem.
