What we do

We test the motor, the switch, and the power supply before condemning anything, because a dead cover is as often a failed switch, a tripped GFCI, or a corroded connection as it is the motor itself. If the motor is genuinely failed we replace it and check the drive mechanism it was working against, since a binding track or a seized pulley is frequently what killed it.

Pool Cover Rope Replacement

The cover pulls to one side as it opens or closes
You can see fraying where the rope enters the track
The rope has snapped and the cover won't move

What we do

Ropes are a wear item — they run through the track under tension every cycle and they will eventually fray and part. We replace both ropes rather than just the failed one, because a rope that has reached the end of its life on one side means the other is the same age under the same load. We also inspect the pulleys and sliders the rope runs over, since a worn pulley will chew through a new rope quickly.

What should I do if my pool cover is stuck or won't open?: Stop running the motor. Repeatedly forcing a cover that is jammed is what turns a small problem into a snapped rope or a burnt-out motor. Why does my pool cover pull to one side as it opens?: Uneven travel almost always means the two ropes are no longer at matched tension, or one side is dragging on a worn pulley, slider, or a section of track packed with grit. It is worth addressing early — a cover running crooked puts uneven load into the fabric and the motor, so a cheap adjustment now often prevents a fabric or motor replacement later.
My cover motor hums but nothing moves. Is the motor dead?: Not necessarily. A humming motor that doesn't move the cover often means the mechanism is jammed rather than the motor being failed — ice in the track, a seized pulley, or a rope off its pulley will all do it. Should I repair or replace my automatic pool cover?: It depends on which part has failed. Ropes, sliders, pulleys, and motors are wear items and are normally worth replacing individually on an otherwise sound system. Fabric that has gone brittle, split at the seams, or lost its ability to hold water is at the end of its life and needs replacing.
